  • When Mark becomes a HS Physic teacher, I'm DEF going back to school. Do I care that I just graduated college and I'm in my 20s? No. Do I care that I actually sucked at physics in high school? No. Will I be old as Methuselah sitting in a high school class with my backpack and notebook? Yes, yes I will.

It took me until age 35 to not be afraid of it and part of that is because of your videos so...thank you for being awesome.

  • THIS IS NOT THE CORRECT EXPLANATION. First, weight of the air molecules does NOT have much of an effect on the frequency at which vocal chords vibrate. Vocal cords vibrate at a rate primarily determined by the elastic force of the muscle. Think of a pure vs damped oscillator. Damping doesn't change the frequency by much. To change the frequency by even a small, but detectable amount, you'd need a significant change in damping force relative to the elastic force of the vocal muscles, and this simply isn't so. Further, this effect simply can't explain the drastic differences we hear in the video. But if the frequency doesn't change, why do the voices sound so different? First, you need to understand that nearly the entirety of your voice actually comes from resonance. THE VOCAL CHORDS THEMSELVES SIMPLY MAKE A HIGH BUZZING SOUND - kind of like the mouthpiece of a woodwind or brass instrument. IT IS THE SHAPE OF THE INSTRUMENT / YOUR VOCAL TRACT AND HEAD that gives your voice it's primary quality and tone. Now for the final piece of the explanation: A RESONANT CHAMBER RESPONDS TO WAVELENGTH, NOT FREQUENCY. (With your vocal tract and head consisting of many complex resonant chambers). Namely, a resonant chamber will resonate primarily with sounds that have a wavelength that is roughly the same length as it (with a factor 2 or 4 depending on open/closed tube), as well as harmonic wavelengths that are an integer fraction of the fundamental wavelength. THE FUNDAMENTAL (same length as resonant chamber, with a factor of 2 or 4 depending on open/closed tube) WAVELENGTH RESONATES THE MOST, WHILE SHORTER HARMONIC WAVELENGTHS RESONATE LESS AND LESS (the higher the harmonic is). Now consider: WHILE FREQUENCY IS THE SAME, WAVELENGTH GETS LONGER IN HELIUM because the speed of sound is greater (lighter molecules propagate sound faster, and remember relationship that (speed of wave) = (wavelength)*(frequency)). This means that LOWER FREQUENCIES GET FILTERED OUT IN HELIUM BECAUSE THE WAVELENGTH BECOMES TOO LONG TO RESONATE. Likewise, HIGH FREQUENCIES ARE AMPLIFIED BECAUSE THEIR WAVELENGTHS BECOME CLOSER TO / EXACTLY THE FUNDAMENTAL WAVELENGTH FOR A GIVEN RESONANCE CHAMBER. And thus your voice (which consists of many frequencies overlayed) sounds higher with helium because higher frequencies are amplified/resonate more and lower frequencies are suppressed. Also, you can think of it a bit like a high pass filter. Hope this clears things up, because there's a lot of contradicting stuff out on the internet, and I've done a lot of digging.

I found myself smiling at that “Eureka” moment. My 16 year old son loves everything you’ve ever done and I’m glued to my screen every video as well. Keep up your enthusiasm; it’s addictive.

  • A simple explanation: Sound, is air vibrations that your eardrums hear. Sound is slower than the speed of light, and if anything exceeds the speed of sound, it creates a sonic boom. Your vocal chords create vibrations that create air vibrations to bump into molecules. Helium makes your vocal chords easier to move, making it high pitch. Sulfur hexafluoride makes the vocal chords move slower, making it lower pitched.

  • I don’t think this is correct. Your vocal cords vibrate at the same frequency for all 3 gasses. The reason your voice is higher with helium is because the speed of sound is faster through that gas due to its lower density (and similar compressibility) than air. This changes the resonances of your vocal tract by making it more responsive to high-frequency sounds, so the low parts of your voice are still there, they’re just not as prevalent as the higher pitch ones with the helium. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong though, this is just what was taught to me in physics.
