A little bit of elbow grease goes a long way. To prevent your motorcycle chain from living a shorter than desirable lifespan, keeping it fresh and clean is paramount. In this How To video, Lemmy walks you through the process of how to clean and lube your motorcycle chain. With the right tools and some knowhow, extending the life of your motorcycle chain and sprockets, as well as increasing performance (and just looking better overall), can be done with a minimal time and monetary commitment.
How To Step by Step:
Step One: Figure out your chain type.
Step Two: Arrange your bike in a position that will make your chain easily accessible.
Step Three: Examine your motorcycle chain.
Step Four: Spray your chain with chain cleaner.
Step Five: Scrub the chain.
Step Six: Re-soak the motorcycle chain with your cleaning agent of choice.
Step Seven: Fully dry your motorcycle.
Step Eight: When fully dry, Apply Lubricant evenly on all sides of your chain.
Step Nine: Clean up and ride!
make a spray shield out of cardboard or paper to keep oil and overspray off of wheel and tire. you don't want to grease up your tire.
@MrItsthething that is absolutely genius.
You will make that mistake once and only once. Whoopsie!
You can also spray some soapy water on your tire which will prevent any oils that get on it from sticking.
@Jay Law My pleasure Jay!!! Takes but a few seconds to lay down,to avoid precious cleanup afterwards!!! Well worth it!!! ;-)
@menom7 that is a good tip, forgot the floor!
My Suzuki handbook says not to use kerosene and recommends detergent, who's right?
Nice!! Do my chain next please!
Now we need a video on how to clean the rags 😂
What bike is that?
Excellent vid thankyou !!👍👏😁
how often are you supposed to clean the chain? how often do you lubricate it?
Is there anything wrong with using old motor oil
Thanks
Yes, motor oil will collect many more contaminants, meaning the chain will wear down faster. We suggest a chain lube specific lubrication to extend the life of your chain and sprockets. -Zack
Well explained mate.Thank you
Is it dangerous if you get it on your tyre?
What bike is that?? 😍
Lol we use engine oil to lube chain 😂 so we did it wrong the whole time..
Kerosene cleans the best!
"I wanna get this thing good and gooey" lol
Just why are you doing the face of the plate???? ONLY PLACE NEEDING LUBE IS O-RINGS AND CONTACT BETWEEN THE SPROCKET. And yes KEROSINE but have the chain wet with clean kerosine when applying the lube. This will further dilude the lube to get past the O-rings where the lube is needed. Then just leave it for half an hour for the kerosine to vapor off and the lube to gain it original viscosity. Another point is never use brushes because these will push the dirt under and past the O-rings to the most important areas of the chain. TAKE A RAG AND SOAK IT IN KEROSINE AND PULL THE CHAIN THROUGH THE RAG TILL IT IS CLEAN. Then apply a clean rag with clean kerosine to wet the chain and lube it while wet. Let it dry and add little more lube and you are done. NO BRUSHES!!!
Great audio on this...hate it when folks have a crappy mic and you cant hear em....
Diesel also works
You just sprayed both of those all over your rim and tire. That's gotta be hard to remove. My rims are shiny blue.
Simply buy Motul C1 cleaner and Motul C1 chain lube
Can i use normal gasoline instead of kerosene?
This will be bad for the rubber
Thank you for this well done instructional vid!
I just rub my chains with old toothbrush
That chain wax will stink up your garage for days. Finally bought some BMW chain lube,no odor at all.
thanks for the great info
Outstanding video. Thank you.
got white walls for next season, not looking forward to chain cleans
Omg it work for me !!! I have been think where I could get money to start a new business until I found out about a page online on LTworlds how u can make more money, I made $25000 from cryptonaid .com website online days back
That was very informative, thanks bro..🙏
Use removed engine oil to lubricate the plain chain, but make sure it is filtered
Could have been a minute video but it's hard to make to the point videos
Hahaha it work!!! I have been think where I could get money to start a new business until I found out about a page online on LTworlds how u can make more money, I made $35000 from cryptonaid .com website online days back
Got my first bike brand new bike this summer 2800 miles on it. I put it in storage for winter. Never touched the chain. I an kinda scared now
Kerosin/diesel does the cleaning and SAE90 oil lubes better.
What kind of bike is this.
I think it's a 1200 gs

But fortnine says it'll get through the orings which is what you don't want
second to none,video

Well presented, easy to understand. What a great video. As a n00b I appreciate this!
I know im a bit late too comment to this video, but for the safety of other motor parts like paint on mags, i recommend putting out the chain and soak it in a container with kerosene
Great job Lemmy. This is my first video by Revzilla and I was impressed with your professionalism, fast pace, omitted jokes and "personality" interference, and overall quality of the educational content. Just picked up a $200 1972 Triumph 650 and the manual says to remove the chain, scrub it with kerosene, melt some "grease" and soak the chain in this grease. Seems like this would turn the bike into a grease pin-wheel at freeway speeds. I'll follow your instructions instead Thanks. -BA
to long to watch, honestly
This is a nice how-to, don't get me wrong, but I vehemently suggest watching Fortnine's review on chain cleaners and lubes. It's scientific, very thorough and pretty funny. It's the absolute go-to in terms of what products to use.
15:32 you missed a spot
Too messy dude
Thanks
Not a single mention of keeping the pussy on the chainwax?
Am I wrong or is that master link clip on backwards?
Excellent tutorial. LTworlds was made for stuff like this.
First thing every biker should learn about maintaining their bike. Saves money, keeps you and your crank case safe, and after a while you'll have your own special black magic method and lube/cleaner choice that you SWEAR make your chain virtually immortal.
I use kerosene and 180 grade oil for lubing..
Nice tutorial...👌👌👌
Good stuff!!
What sort of kerosene to use there's so many different types
White kerosene works best. Cheap, too. I unfold cardboard beer box and tuck between to keep everything off the wheel. 650 miles a week, so I do it every Sunday. Easy job.
For gods sake stfu n lube the chain that is all your doing nothing else who cares about the science behind it, its a lubrication different or same they all do their job keeping the chain in good condition
What tires are those?!!!! I need
You can find those here: www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/heidenau-k60-scout-tires I hope that helps! -Zack
I thought kerosene spoils tyes
What if you get some of that lube on the tyre? What will clean it off?
It is always a good idea to wipe off any overspray from your tire, and just take it easy for the first block or two after lubricating your chain, to ensure no lube got where it might affect handling. -Zack
love from Bangladesh. you saved my 250 taka
Dude is cooler than the freezer in my house
Just buy an automatic lubricator like a scottoiler and you will never have to do this shi... work again. You always have a perfectly lubricated and completely clean chain and it will last longer.
Can we use Diesel instead of Kerosene?
Excellent tutorial! - many thanks from across the pond😉👍
8:23 I use kerosene to clean my chain too. But, instead of a spray bottle, I use a "wash bottle" like the kind used in labs. Instead of a mist, it makes a stream when you squeeze it. It's all personal preference though.
Which motorcycle is that?
Over 2 million riders didn't know this already 😂
great video thank you will look into getting that stuff for my dirty girl my honda 750 shadow ace looks like it will work wonders on my chain
4:29 She's ready for you Lemmy...
Just told my girlfriend I'm going out to buy some lube. It's nice to see her as excited as I am about my bike.
Well done
you definitely got the GUNK and The MUNK out of the chain and the LOT of GUNK and MUNK out of over the lift... that dirty GUNK and MUNK.. good instructions.
Hi if kerosene is not available can i use paint thinner as a substitute and is it safe for the O rings? Thank you!
Lemmy go ahead and thank you for this video
Mechanic from Oxford 😂 More theory lesser practical Clean the grease on chain with a thinner Spray liquid grease on chain by gently rotating as simple as that....
I find that I get sprayed with tiny droplets of lube as I ride. It doesn't happen much, but It's annoying. Is this normal? I try to wipe it down after ever cleaning and lubing, but it still gets me. Also, I used to over lube it, and there would be a lot of residue all over the bike. Not good. I'm still learning.
11:45 my dad's friend lost 2 fingers doing this...
My brother's friend was cleaning his chain with the engine on. It ripped the end of his finger off. Don't do it guys!
I did the same with no gloves or pants, now im jewish.
Wrong lubrication. You have not lubricated the other side of the chain. These type of lubrication hardly goes 1week smooth then the chain sprocled starts getting damaged quickly.
yo i swear Kermit the Frog is speaking at 5:30 lol. great vid
Thanks for the info, just got my stand, cleaner, lube today, off I go!
Where can you buy kerosene?
Acetone can be used. I use it on alot of my project parts for cleaning, removing oils and residue. Jus remove o'rings Same shit
Hi guys! First of all thank you for this channel, and for the tons of useful info in your videos. Such a priceless source for beginner bikers... and most probably for experienced ones too! I bought a Kawasaki z650 two years ago. Now, after 20,000km my chain is really worn. I took care of it (cleaning and lubing) and in my first year I was riding rather gently, but in the last 5,000km its maintenance became increasingly difficult. Which seems a little early... even for a original manufacturer’s chain. So, I try to understand what might have caused this. And avoid a similar faith for my next chain! I’ve been using a brush similar to the Grunge Brush shown in your video. Is there a chance that I’ve been too rough when using it and as consequence I damaged the O-ring seals of the chain?
I do use this same technique, just one question how to clean the brush? I had to buy 2 more brush in 3yrs, it gets dirty a lot.
@Ryan gst You mean Turpentine?
Go to home depo, in paint section, they have brush cleaner chemical.
Which bike is that?
I love you man 💓💓💓💓💓
What an awesome video! I'd once heard with mountain bikes that diesel is a good cleaner/lubricant. I have used it for years on my bike, dried it carefully, then lubed it...is that a safe kerosene-alternative?
Oh and by "bike" I mean my motorcycle too.
Blast it Spray it with lube Call it a day
Me who cleans my chain while the bike is in gear. XD
Needs more chain lube
I’m quite new to bikes, how do you tell the difference between plain chain and a sealed chain?
Do we really need a video for this lol
See a few bikes about that look like they left there chain on the beach
did chain wax make any one else thing of Key& Peele XD
Scottoiler are good dont act like glue
Is it OK to use prepsol to clean the chain?
You can now clean your chain easy, fast and mess free with ChainBath: ltworlds.info/home/vaizdo-ra-as/uqSdy7WXaMuEgKw.html Give your chain a bath and stop the mess!
bro it's 2020 do you have any idea how hard it is to find Kerosene anywhere?
Acetone-home depo, in paint section, gallon is like 18 bucks. Id do a 5:1 mix with diesel. Wear gloves and respirator. Get that shit sparkling
Diesel is essentially the same thing. Green handle at the gas station (U.S.)
Puppy??...really thats the term he use?
