2021 Land Rover Defender 110 P400 real-world review. Is it really that good?

The new Land Rover Defender is winning plenty of plaudits but what's it really like to live with? To find out, I tested this Defender 110 P400 in all conditions; rain, snow, floods, shopping and commuting to see if this really is a proper Defender.

  • Glad to see Land Rover hasn’t made a hash of the design like they did with the Discovery 5, I think they are right on the price point as people with money want exclusivety and personalisation and that’s what they get along with a glorious sounding engine, well petrol anyway. I personally think I would spend my own money on a top spec 110 diesel 👍🏻

  • The best thing about Land Rover is networking, you'll be going to the dealer every now and then because of all the electric and mechanical failures, so you get to meet a lot of fancy and sophisticated people and have tons of espressos. So do yourself a favor, never buy this thing, just lease it and let the dealer have fun with it and you get to try all of LR products while your toy is being fixed.... THE END

  • A very good review of the Defender but I cant help but feel like they've made some massive errors making this thing. They made if out of aluminum but with the mild hybrid system its still 2.3 tonnes and only does 18mpg with a 6 second 0-60. Yes its good off road, but with that weight how good is it really? So many of the decisions they made for this thing just end up shooting themselves in the foot. I think the one to get would have to be the base model diesel.

    BenBenPrieš 18 dienų
  • Its not a proper off roader Harry , Ask Andrew St Piere White of 4XOverland he said you cant fit a Winch to the new Defender, someone tried it and guess what ? they cut right into a wiring loom thats been so cleverly placed in the front bumper area , so it is not a true off roader sadly

  • DO NOT BUY..asked for a buy back a week later..first problems: radio, reverse camera, traffic not showing, keyless entry, air suspension low in the morning...then after dealership downloaded new software in two visits, now keyless entry never works, sometimes traffic is off(4g), air suspension goes down in front only during an overnight...many other defenders are having these problems..I wanted my velar back that had 0 problems in 30K

  • Well Harry. For me you have sadly and predictably said the same thing as every other motoring journalist. Boring. For me the best thing about the old defender was you can jump in it and off road in the woods or wherever with no bother. If you clip a tree or a rock and smash a light. You can order a new one online for about ten bucks and fit it yourself in about 20 mins. Do that on a new defender and you will be crying into your bank statements for a month! You can tow the horsebox, push through gateways and clip the odd stone wall in a real defender. New one it too delicate, for a farmer, workforce or overlander. Sweeping through the apexes of country roads is not what a defender is for. On road performance, honestly. Buy a range rover, thats what it was for. And you summed it up, you are thinking of swapping your range rover for a new defender! A totally mental thing to say for a land rover customer. Talk about stealing from your own client base. And as for the price. Utility vehicle; Isuzu D Max... that has the correct starting price vs equipment and spec. What a load of old tosh.

  • Try finding a Defender at the lower price. You will not get much change from £50,000 if you spec one thing on it. Glad you brought up the price though as most reviews just gloss over it.

  • If it looks like an SUV, it _is_ an SUV, a street car mostly. And with air suspension it won't be as hardy as traditional coil-springed off-roaders. Now the Ineos Grenadier, _that's_ the real new Defender, the progeny that JLR simply let get away.

I have one if last d4 landmark in 66 plate and have seat covers and all other outside accessories to boot. I may mention that defender had extensive usb charging point all around the vehicle. I also loved seeing Harry's collection of Classic cars in his "barn". It would be good to see those on the road and at the odd rally meeting.

  • This comment section seems to be full of Harry fan boys or people who are after an SUV. The issues with the new Defender are not based on it's SUV capabilities, the issues are based on it's 4x4 capabilities. Driving in open paddocks and wading through water at that depth can be achieved by the majority of good standard SUV's. Question being can the new Defender out perform it's predecessor when offroad, doing rock steps, through heavy mud, and all the good stuff. It's yet to prove that it can.

  • The back door alone is as far from practicality as can be without going into ‘no door at all’. Design is a bit of a lie - this car just tries to please those who where unhappy with dc100 and in general isn’t drawn with car in mind. It was drawn with market in mind which is 100% anti-defender. Prices and big engines, electronics... it is essentially a response to gelandwagen. Farmers won’t buy any of these, but for the money bags gelandwagen is still a better show-off machine and a better piece of luxury. This car is a full of little lies in disguises, here and there, detached from reality and having connection to history which is 100% marketing and nothing more. Oh, and new ford bronco seems to be the real replacement for defender. So sad that LR became a drama queen:(

  • By all accounts, it is an amazing package, the new Defender. And I have seen quite a few video reviews that back that up. And I do love the new, yet retro styling of the exterior, and the interior. And on paper, not much comes close. However, I think I'll wait for an urban used one, cos even £45k is beyond my price range atm. But I agree, I think the new Defender is gonna be a big hit, especially when the commercial variant comes to market. I have already seen a few of these on the road already, and they do have a great stance and sit very nicely, and seem to have bags of composure. So once again, it looks like Land Rover have created the perfect off roader for our times.

  • Had an old 2010 110 utility and it was very much a love hate relationship depending on where I had to take it (underground city centre car parks were particularly sketchy). This seems like a much better all round proposition. Unfortunately the price has gone up considerably, I’d probably prefer an older Defender / Discovery / Range Rover with enough left over for a cheap Cayman / M3 / etc.
